| Wish us luck in our bid to restore Whitestone Pond
I am delighted that we have the full support of the Ham&High (Comment, January 25) which described the proposed Whitestone Pond facelift as one of the "most satisfactory and enduring outlays imaginable". Working on this project I have been amazed by the strength of feeling and irritation aroused by the desperate state of the Pond and its environs. Ironically, I have also noticed how frequently, (understandably), the Ham&High features photos of this landmark location. The Tour of Britain, a national cycling event which took place in September 2006, attracted huge crowds to the area and particularly to the pond. We can safely anticipate that when the Olympic cycle events pass through the Whitestone Pond area, it will not only be a major congregating area for spectators, but that the world's cameras will take advantage of its spectacular views of London.
Bringing a taste of Italy
THE NEW owners of an Italian restaurant in Shirley, which went into liquidation, have insisted that it's 'business as normal'. The well-established Da Corrado Restaurant, in Stratford Road, closed its doors for three weeks after a liquidator was drafted in. However Earlswood couple Petros and Sally Dalabiras took over the reins on Saturday and say the eatery will become 100 per cent Italian. "The company who ran the restaurant before are nothing to do with it now," said Sally. "The opportunity came up for us when it went into liquidation and we want to get back that feel of a family business. "We've got a lot of established clientele who have been coming for years. There's been a slight facelift and Petros is talking to the head chef with the view to revamp the menu.
Doctors Can Work Without Malpractice Insurance
JACKSONVILLE, FL -- Marcia Beaird's life changed forever about a year and a half ago. She has to wear a pressure garment for the rest of her life. It's basically a body suit that helps keep the swelling down. From her breasts on down to her ankles she is covered with scars. She lost her skin because of a flesh eating bacteria infection. Beaird says she got the infection after she had liposuction. She says her doctor used unsterile instruments in the surgery. "I have to be able to go forward and not let this eat at me inside. It's hard sometimes," says Beaird who has hired an attorney and is in the early stages of taking legal action against her doctor. Beaird says she realizes she will get little if anything in her case. Her doctor is one of the more than 2,000 doctors statewide that elect not to carry medical malpractice insurance.
